History of Henna
Traditionally henna art has been used as a rite of passage for women marking lifes significant milestones such as marriage, pregnancy, baby showers, birth of a child, engagement, coming of age, birthdays, anniversaries and religious ceremonies. Today it is ever more popular as more and more modern styles are being adapted for unique occasions. Henna is a plant which grows in the tropical climates of Africa, the Mediterranean, the Middle East and Southern Asia. The leaves of the henna plant are ground into a fine powder out of which a paste is made. This creates a rich, red orange to brown stain on the skin that lasts, depending on body chemistry for a week to two weeks.
